Woodford Reserve, Bourbon of all trades, master of none.

Anyone who has been to a bar in America has seen the flat, wide, squat-necked silhouette of a Woodford Reserve Bottle. It has undoubtedly proven itself to be an icon of the bourbon world. Woodford Reserve pours a rich, warm amber with hints of caramel and honey, reflecting its careful aging process in charred oak barrels. The liquid has a medium viscosity, with slow, elegant legs that cling to the glass, hinting at its smooth and oily texture. Its inviting color immediately suggests depth and complexity.

On the Nose:

The aroma of Woodford Reserve is one of its standout features, offering a refined and balanced bouquet that feels like something you'd pull out of a cowboy's saddle or pour out of an oil baron's decanter. On the nose, you’re greeted with a harmonious blend of sweet and spicy notes. Prominent scents include vanilla, caramel, and toffee, underpinned by a rich oak backbone. There are also hints of dried fruit, along with a touch of citrus zest and a subtle floral note, likely from the high rye content in the mash bill. A faint spice, reminiscent of cinnamon or nutmeg, rounds out the experience, making the nose both inviting for all and still complex enough to have depth.

On the Palate:

Woodford Reserve delivers a smooth, medium-bodied experience that balances sweetness, spice, and oak. The initial sip reveals a welcoming blend of caramel, honey, and brown sugar, which are quickly complemented by a burst of baking spices: cinnamon, clove, and a touch of pepper. The rye in the mash bill (18% rye, 72% corn, 10% malted barley) shines through, without fail, adding a layer of spice that keeps the sweetness in check. There’s also a subtle fruitiness, with notes of apple and citrus peel, adding lightness to the profile. The oak influence is present but not overpowering, providing structure without dominating the other flavors. The balance here is key—nothing feels out of place, and the flavors meld together seamlessly.

The Finale:

The finish is medium-length, warm, and satisfying, with a lingering sweetness that fades into a gentle spice. Notes of oak, vanilla, and a hint of cocoa linger on the tongue, along with a faint nuttiness, possibly almond or hazelnut. There’s a touch of dryness at the end, likely from the oak, but it’s not harsh or astringent. The finish leaves you wanting another sip.

Sipping: Obviously, it's a solid sipper. A very accessible bourbon for new palates to explore

The rugged, but deeply detailed nature of Woodford's profile most reminds me of the William bison skin oxford. Each skin's unique depth of color and detail framed by a classic, elegant oxford design perfectly mirror Woodford's distinctive but dignified flavor profile. Use Code "WOODFORD" for 20% off your pair of Williams.

Mixing: While there are countless bourbon cocktails that does Woodford's accessible but complex profile justice, I always find myself returning to my dad's cocktail of choice: The Old fashioned.

  • 2 oz Woodford Reserve
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
  • 1 luxardo cherry
  • 1 orange

Muddle the cherry and sugar cube into a lowball glass, pour the woodford in over the mixture, dash with your bitters, and top it off with a slice of the orange peel as the garnish. A delightful classic using a well rounded, well crafted spirit to lead the show.

Overall, Woodford Reserve bourbon is very tasty and very tasteful in its elegance and purpose. If one word could describe it, it would be balanced.
