If you’re wearing lower rise wearing trousers clip on suspenders, just stop. You look like you’re wearing a mandatory “semi-formal” wedding outfit from a pintrest board. People won't necessarily be able to put their finger on it, but it's clear that you were instructed to wear this by your date or by the bride.
By wearing low-rise trousers with these suspenders, you draw attention to your gut, and even if you don’t have one, the dark vertical and horizontal lines of the suspenders and the waistband down on your hips will frame a gut and draw all eyes right to it.
If you are wearing suspenders (which is the preferred way of keeping your pants up) there are two golden rules to apply:
#1- Make sure your trousers are up at your true waist, right above your belly button/hips, the narrowest point of your torso. Many unseasoned men still find the idea of a loose-fitting, high-rise (ideally pleated) trouser to be controversial. This is likely because they are still referencing pictures of Connor McGregor from 2017 or a GQ issue from 2015. It's time to grow beyond these vulgar and outdated trends.
#2- Make sure the suspenders have button loops and that your trousers have suspended buttons inside or outside the waistband. These elastic clip on monstrosities look cheap and child-like. Not to mention, if these are YOUR trousers and not ones rented from Men's Wearhouse, you are actively doing unrepairable damage to your clothes that can easily be avoided. The button-in suspenders also distribute the pull of the suspenders against the weight of the trousers across the entire waistband as opposed to the typical 3 clips that those elastic atrocities attach to.
Luckily, adding suspender buttons to trousers is an easy job for any local tailor, or a relatively simple DIY for those inclined. It's an investment in your personal style that you will come to greatly appreciate when you put them on. No more worry about suspenders snapping off, these thin bands of elastic sliding off your shoulders, or appearing as though you are wearing a $30 Peaky Blinders Halloween costume. Finding button-suspenders isn't terribly difficult, many quality menswear shops have them. T.R's Sartorial even has some suspenders with complimenting (never matching) ties as ideal accessories sets to elevate an outfit.
