Maximizing Minimalism

Maximizing Minimalism

In a time where ultra-sleek, near robotic minimalism is still seen as the image of the future by so many, it is no wonder why it is still so prevalent in the world of design. Many young men are drawn to the stark, stern nature of a simplistic design. This same demeanor attracts brutalist architecture, and cold, corporate ideals centered around efficiency. Coming from a maximalist perspective, and also appreciating diplomacy in the aesthetic revolution, my natural question becomes the title of this article: How to Maximize Minimalism

There are three ways to do this, which, in light of the plain base, can be combined for the REAL pioneers. These three ways are: Texture, layering, and silhouette.

  • Texture
    • Texture is the easiest and most cost-effective way to maximize your minimalist style. If you adore your sleek, monochrome, simplistic outfits, you have a unique opportunity to catch eyes up close through texture. Take an eye for uniquely woven fabrics for your simple style. Admire the curious feels and weights of various fabrics and materials before planning out your season’s wardrobe. A great example is making use of various leather textures through exotic skins. Nothing would compliment an all-black outfit more than the subtle but unmistakable texture of the crocodile in the Struthers Boot. The main redeeming element of minimalism is the opportunity for subtle distinction to shine. If you miss this, then you are just a simple-minded goober who is terrified of being remotely interesting.
  • Layering
    • Another great opportunity to take advantage of minimalism is layering. While slightly more dependent on season and weather, layering is an ideal way to add visual interest for a minimalist. One of my favorite, minimalistic outfits I ever saw in person was a friend of mine wearing a chore jacket and a turtleneck. The layering not just of the jacket and the turtleneck, but the various pockets of the jacket, all monochromatic black, created a delightful depth of visual interest while still remaining sleek and minimal. If one is to layer, the best way to retain this sleek minimal aesthetic is to embrace a monochromatic color palette for your outfit. This will let the various layers truly shine.
  • Silhouette
    • Now this, this is the boldest way, by far, to maximize your minimalism. It requires more vision and finesse: one cannot solely rely on a half-baked collection of ordinary pieces for an all-black outfit. To stand out through silhouette, one must be bold, dramatic, and wise. You must understand you shape and the shape of your clothing. Whether store bought, or more likely custom, silhouette requires an encompassing knowledge of each piece and how they will interact with each other. This complicated art form is often seen on the experimental and ultra-creative runways at its most exaggerated. It requires an appreciation for the bigger style picture: knowing how a raised collar or wide pant will slow into an outfit and define the look. A minimal outfit made stylish by silhouette and shape is the true mark of a visionary. Wrong or right, it will be noteworthy.
Due to its simplicity and popularity, countless young men flock to the ideal image of minimalism, from Kanye West to John Wick. The sleekness and aura generated by an understated but stylish ensemble has undeniable appeal. However, something so iconic leaves ample room to be done wrong, and a surprisingly narrow window of what to be done right. Minimalism is by no means a cheat code to a more stylish way of life.
